How Donald Trump’s Tower make you feel exciting everytime you walk in

Trump Towers Mall was built by the world’s one of the most prestigious companies Trump Organization, in Istanbul’s central business area, Mecidiyeköy, as a business and shopping complex and opened in 2012. Trump Tower has become one of the important locations of the business and shopping world with its central location and the brands it contains where each one is more famous than the other

Appealing to a large mass, Trump Towers Mall which is a huge complex is as successful as its foreign precedents and it needed a central system through which advertisement and news broadcasting appropriate for the visitor population would be done. This project is designed to use the spaces inside the place commodiously both in terms of functionality and equipment. Visited by thousands of people everyday, Trump Towers Mall aimed to make its location and brand value more equipped through the technology.

Within the scope of the project planned in the most proper way for the line and need of the place, 65 display monitors and hardware and software compounds constituting a central broadcasting system were installed at appropriate points inside Trumps Towers Mall. Two different display types of 55 inches and 46 inches were used in terms of space usage. Display monitors with different dimensions were installed at the points determined meticulously with the right angle so that the visitors can watch the broadcasting with advertisement and news contents easily.

Within the framework of the project, Scala Digital Signage application, which is the leading brand in the world, was preferred as the central broadcasting system application platform. In the project whose broadcasting management is carried out by Kiosk Innova, advertisement videos are broadcasted and reported within the frame of a determined program. Apart from the advertisement broadcasts, the current news and weather forecast information can also be displayed with specific backgrounds and templates designed particularly for the project.

Thanks to the 65 display monitors installed in Trump Tower by Kiosk Innova, advertisement and news contents that are appropriate for the visitor population of the complex are being broadcasted through a central system. The display monitors create completeness with the modern appearance of the place and ensure that the visitors can reach various news and information.

The first generation cash register of Watsons stores is located at the innermost of the shop and therefore customers are less likely to walk into the store. In fact, the cashier could be work as guide for customers to enter the store.

Founder of Under Armour was once so broke he couldn’t pay a $2 toll — here’s the story what the experience taught him about In-store activates the space with DIGITAL SIGNAGE and disrupt the industry.

uakevin

Billionaire Under Armour founder Kevin Plank aims for nothing less than having his company become the US leader in sports apparel and equipment.

Under Armour is expected to report another successful year, with $3.91 billion in estimated 2015 revenue, up 27% from 2014, and $408 million in profit, up 15%, according to the Motley Fool.

But it was a lesson he learned when he was at the absolute bottom, with a product prototype and not a dime to his name, that has helped drive him through any hurdle.

Plank launched Under Armour with its flagship synthetic fiber athletic shirt in 1996 with his $16,000 in life savings. After he and his friend, and now Under Armour CMO, Kip Fulks found some collegiate customers, he partnered with a textile source and manufacturer to get the business going.

Plank soon found himself with $3,500 to his name and $6,000 of bills that needed to be paid. In what seemed like a good idea at the time, he took all but $100 out of the bank and headed over to Atlantic City to gamble. He lost every cent.

Plank found himself on his way home to Maryland from Atlantic City, stopped at the toll booth of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, begging for mercy from the toll operator. “It was the single worst moment of my life, having to face that poor toll booth operator, waiting for her two dollars,” he told “Shark Tank” investor Daymond John for Johns’ new book “The Power of Broke.”

“I was so broke, I couldn’t even check for loose change in the ashtray, in the seat cushions,” Plank said.

He told John that he couldn’t keep himself from crying. The whole experience stands out in his memory, however, because of what happened next.

A day after his blackjack trip, Plank dropped by his mom’s house for dinner. He told her the business was going great, but he was thinking that he’d just made the biggest mistake of his life.

After eating, he went to the post office to check the P.O. box he was using for Under Armour, and inside was a $7,500 check from the Georgia Institute of Technology — the athletic director had owed him the payment for awhile, but Plank didn’t expect to get it in time to cover his own bills.

As he told Men’s Journal about the moment in 2013, “That was the last time I doubted the company.” He told himself, “Wipe the tears away, stand up, be a man, run your business, find a way.”

It taught him two fundamental lessons that he continues to pass onto new entrepreneurs: Don’t blame forces outside of your control for misfortune, and tough it out in the early days rather than taking on investments and giving away equity.

He’s taken his optimistic view to Under Armour’s global team, as well. “Everywhere you go, you hear people talk about how the world is falling apart,” he told John. “Everybody is an expert. But at Under Armour, I want people to control what they can control. Leave the pontificating to everyone else. Leave all that negative talk to everyone else.”

Now here we go how Under-Armour Disrupt the  sport Apparel Industry

Under Armour, founded in 1996 and projected to do more than $2B in sales this year, likes to do things differently. Recently, I chronicled the very original Under Armour storytailing concept in Shanghai, where it’s more story than store. I wasn’t able to find out how many stores Under Armour (UA) has in Japan (their store locator curiously omits Japan – see right), but in their flagship store in Shibuya, Tokyo, Under Armour has a storefront that stands out from a crowded crowd.

Under Armour Shibuya Digitail, The Myndset digital marketing brand strategy

The storefront is black and matt. Inside, the store is on several levels. The environment is true to the brand (predominantly a masculine audience and range).

DIGITAIL 1.0

On the ground floor, they have installed an interactive kiosk. Not exactly mind blowing, but it features a flat top screen where you can program the videos you would like to see projected on the large screen hanging above.

Under Armour Shibuya Digitail, The Myndset digital marketing brand strategy

 BRAND CONTENT

The interface has decent functionality and you can reasonably easily flip through the other options. The films are all rather much of a sameness as far as I was concerned. The store did not propose wifi (shame) and none of the staff saw fit to engage with me as I fiddled with the screen (missed opportunity, notwithstanding my poor Japanese!). The other missed opportunity: to capture my data (opt in, of course).

Under Armour Shibuya Digitail, The Myndset digital marketing brand strategy

GETTING DIGITAIL RIGHT

While I obviously cannot judge how successful this store is, there was a decent size crowd of shoppers (browsers?). Getting digital in retail (“digitail”) right is not an easy feat. Questions that need to be considered:  (You can click to tweet out the recommendations you feel most pertinent with the accompanying link!)

  • What purpose will the digital interface serve? i.e. why? Ensure a tight link between the digital activity and the brand’s business objectives.
  • How will its performance be measured? (Quantitative and qualitative metrics)
  • What content will be provided or created over the lifespan of the project? Consider the editorial calendar and frequency of update.
  • How should the in-store staff be briefed / trained to leverage it?
  • Where should the digital space / device be located in the store?
  • How will bugs be dealt with when (not if) they occur?

Clearly, digital in retail is an evolving space. Too often, the activity is gimmicky or promotional in nature. Ultimately, I have no doubt that there will be some great opportunities for those brands and retailers which get it right. This post’s ambition is just to get the ball started in the right direction.

Now it’s real tactics that every retail business could learn to boost their customer in-store experience ( Utilize of LED Display and DIgital Signage)

As part of that brand experience, activate The Space created five distinct digital design elements for the Brand House:

1) Five-sided suspended LED cube – The five-sided LED structure was built with custom-made LED modules allowing for less than 3 mm on its edges, making it nearly on all five sides, according to Activate The Space. The Cube is suspended from the ceiling over the escalators approximately 24 feet from the first floor, and features 725 square feet of surface area.

2) 30-foot diameter LED ceiling structure – The 30-foot diameter ceiling structure LED also was made with custom LED modules. The LED Ceiling is suspended from the ceiling over the first-floor rotunda 50 feet in the air, and it features a 706-square-foot surface, a 30-foot diameter and a 94-foot circumference.

3) 30-foot diameter ring structure LED – The 30-foot ring structure LED, also of custom-made LED modules, is suspended between the floors in the entrance rotunda. The 94-foot in circumference display features 366 square feet of surface.

4) Optojump Interactive Experience – Activate The Space developed custom software to interpret the light sensors built into the Optojump to measure and display the height a person jumps, according to the company. It allows shoppers to register their score and receive an email about their experience, and the custom software was integrated with Activate The Space’s ~sedna presenter CMS. The firm provided all of the systems required, including a 46-inch 3M touchscreen display, an Apple Mac mini and the custom software.

5) Under Armour Record Kiosks – Activate The Space said it integrated ~sedna presenter onto Mac minis to retrieve screen data and run attraction loops from mobile devices running the UA Record app.

5 Lessons Every Entrepreneurs and Retail Business can learn from Eastin Hotel Malaysia to generate Digital Signage ROI(See picture insides)

Digital signage provides many benefits to hotels and conference centers working to maximize the value they provide to customers.

The cost of digital signage may seem significant, but when evaluated against the potential for return on investment (ROI), a strong business case emerges. Digital signage can generate a revenue return that far outweighs initial investment, and in a short period of time.

The Top 5 Ways to Generate Digital Signage ROI for Hotels and Conference Centers.

Here are some key elements to evaluate when looking at the ROI your digital signage might provide:

img_0497

installation in progress

1. Revenue from promoting in-house amenities

Endemic advertising promotes the amenities owned by your business at your facility, like the spa, bar or restaurants. Your facility benefits from having amenities that will appeal to your audience, at the right time and in the right place, and digital signage makes sure your guests really know what you have to offer!

Digital signage can make a huge impact on sales relative to cost. Digital signage can also be very time-targeted, allowing facilities to promote (for instance) happy hour to conference attendees as they end a day’s meetings, or promote breakfast to guests as they leave their rooms in the morning. Digital signage has an awareness rate higher than almost any other form of advertising (the result of minimal competition, uniqueness and location) at around 70% viewership. Digital signage therefore presents a wonderful way to ensure your amenities are strongly promoted, leading to improved revenue.

2. Revenue from promoting outside businesses

Non-endemic advertising creates revenue by promoting other businesses (outside your facility) to your customers. Revenue is generated by selling advertising time on your digital signage. Venue digital signage is incredibly valuable because hotels capture a specific audience in a specific circumstance – a very targeted demographic, ready to spend money. Here are some reasons your audience is so valuable:

  • Reach – Digital signage in your facility can target a specific audience. For example, hotel guests generally have no option but to eat out while travelling, and their starting point is your hotel.
  • Relevance – Because you draw a particular kind of guest, you can narrow in your content to suit your guests. You can promote dining facilities that provide the types of food and level of quality appropriate for your guests.
  • Impact – You can reach your guests at the right time, when they are inclined to buy.

As a result of these factors, your audience will be very valuable to the right advertiser. A single hotel also has the benefit of being close to the advertisers it promotes. There is huge opportunity to sell advertising to a restaurant across the road from your facility.
You provide access to the right people, at the right time, in the right location, and digital signage can leverage this audience to generate your facility significant revenue.

img_0499

Lobby View

3. Reduction in overhead – F&B staff spending time on meeting room updates

Many facilities struggle with the task of keeping meeting room boards up-to-date and looking good. The process can be a time-intensive, laborious chore that is also prone to failure. Digital signage on room boards reduces staff overhead and production costs tied to printing signage on paper. Digital Signage can be integrated into event management systems, to ensure all boards are updated accurately and on time. Digital Room boards can also serve as another medium for the above advertising-related revenue streams.

4. Reduce cost of front desk and concierge services

The cost of guest services at hotels and conference centers is significant. Helping guests find their meeting rooms or exhibit halls is time-intensive, distracting and often not very helpful for guests. Digital wayfinding can overcome these challenges by providing clear, real-time directions to meeting locations. In addition to wayfinding, interactive concierge boards can be used to highlight local attractions (and directions), local weather forecasts, flight information and printable boarding passes. Not only do these features improve the customer experience, they significantly reduce staff overhead.

5. Increased group meeting and events revenue

How impressive is your meeting and event space? Digital signage instantly projects a level of sophistication and quality that directly affects the short-term and longer term impression customers have of your hotel. Digital signage not only improves the guest experience, it allows your sales team to present your hotel as modern and technologically ready for any group. Simply put, digital signage is a must for any modern meeting area.

The range of revenue-generating and overhead-reducing uses for digital signage means that investment costs can frequently be recouped in 12 months or less, while a digital signage system itself will last 3-5 years. Digital signage therefore represents a revenue stream that requires little maintenance and that can be tuned to the needs of your specific business.

AHD vs HD-CVI what’s difference between them? and See Introduction to AHD Cameras and DVRs

Since the popularity of CMOS image sensor, the traditional analog video surveillance is undergoing tremendous transformation. More and more security camera manufacturers launch new high definition analog solutions, which are, HD-SDI, HD-CVI, HD-TVI, and now HD-AHD. All of them can deliver 720P/1080P high definition images, and transmitting the video over traditional coaxial cable. HD-SDI cameras and HD-SDI DVR are the most expensive HD analog equipment among them, which is the main reason HD-SDI technology doesn’t widely used in HD analog surveillance system. Compared with HD-SDI, the cameras based on other three technologies are very competitive.

We have already written some articles to introduce each of these technologies, and the difference between them. Today, we are going to discuss the difference between HD-CVI cameras and HD-AHD cameras.

The main difference: 1.0 megapixel AHD camera adopts OV9712 + NVP2431H solution, while HD-CVI camera adopts the PO3100K + DH9801 solution. In addition to the difference of solution, the price vary greatly, OV9712 + NVP2431 of AHD camera module only costs US$6.5, and PO3100K + DH9801 camera module costs approximate US$10.

Additionally, AHD camera can connect to CRT display directly, the image can display properly. HD-CVI camera connects to traditional CRT, it doesn’t show images. For video live view/recording/playback, HD-CVI cameras need to work with HD-CVI DVR. It seems, the HD-AHD cameras support 960H output mode, which is very convenient for test and installation. Since the AHD cameras can be backward compatible with all traditional analog equipment. Compared with HD-CVI, it has advantages of great compatibility.

Hit a nutshell, AHD and HD-CVI are very similar. Please note that in order to achieve megapixel definition monitoring (720P), the AHD cameras also need to work with AHD DVR.

Introduction to AHD

16CH 720P AHD DVR

During old traditional surveillance system’s upgrading and replacing, can’t balance between achieving high definition surveillance and combining old traditional analog system become headache for users. In standard analog surveillance system, 960H is the highest resolution, to achieve much higher resolution becomes impossible mission for traditional surveillance system since its limitation from its technology.

If adopts all high definition (HD) IP camera, the entire system need to replace, this will not only generate high labor cost, but also significantly increased the project budget.

AHD stands for analog high definition, AHD’s birth, is to solve the transmission distance limitations of existing HD-SDI solution. As one of new HD analog solution, AHD supports video transmission over traditional 75-3 coaxial cable up to 500 meters, and it becomes another alternative for HD analog solution. By the way, it inherits and carries forward advantages of traditional analog solution, video signal are uncompressed, keep all the original video details, to truly achieve high definition uncompressed lossless, no video latency effect.

1.3 megapixel AHD Camera ModuleSimilar to other HD analog solutions, through using the progressive scan CMOS image sensor, the AHD camera can deliver 1.0 megapixel, 1.3 megapixel, 2 megapixel resolution, added with ICR filter, the camera achieve true day/night video surveillance; and same like the traditional analog system, AHD products support plug-and-play installation, easy to use.

Introduction to AHD Cameras

Turn It On: Insights and Tips for Using Digital Signage at Your Business

The explosion of digital devices in the last decade alone has created for a number of new innovations and channels to market your business and its services.

As digital technology invades practically every aspect of our lives, so does the need to migrate business infrastructure within this cutting-edge space.

According to a Businesswire.com analysis, the global digital signage market will be growing from 14.89 billion in 2015 to 21.92 billion by 2020.

The demand for a digital signage solution is gaining interest and growing investments. When you visit public places like a shopping mall, sports stadium, retail store, waiting area, or an airport, chances are high you have encountered a high-resolution digital display.

Some great examples of the different ways digital signage are used and deployed by retailers (Tommy Hilfiger, Nordstrom, New Balance, Nike FuelStation, Primark, Apple, and others). From this list, each has taken a very different approach to showcasing their original products or services lining up with their typical branding presentations through these displays.

So, how can digital signage boost business opportunities? The below Visual.ly infographic explains what digital signage enhances for restaurants and retailers alike. In particular, digital menu boards improves some of the following metric for restaurants:

  • 47 percent increased customer satisfaction
  • 38 percent increased promotional item sales
  • 21 percent increased check averages
  • 49 percent decreased cost of menu changes

Through the use of interactive kiosks and displays, digital signage has improved retail stores in the following areas:

  • 32 percent increased overall sales volume
  • 35 percent decreased perceived wait times
  • 200 percent increased information retention
  • 33 percent increased repeat buyers

The bottom line is there are some additional aspects that are cost-effective by adopting the digital signage technology and making the business environmentally friendly. A Visix illustration clearly outlines how going green benefits your business outreach:

  1. Reduce paper needs
  2. No need to pay a designer
  3. Increased productivity of employees
  4. Printing needs are minimized
go_green_save_green_5602ee84a2f1e_w1500-668by797

The United States produces 3.7 million tons of copy paper each year. The digital signage avenue can help eliminate the hundreds of flyers printed, paperwork and with other printed materials. Furthermore, digital signage software comes with an easy-to-use interface and not too technical editing tools so you can do the designing work yourself and allocate a designer’s salary towards greener investments.

Lastly, communicating with staff via digital displays increases productivity to a whopping 300 percent. So, employees cost a business $600 per year in printing and no need about budgeting this expense after implementing digital signage. Getting the ball rolling with this medium is a no brainer.

Harnessing the Digital Signage Market

According to eMarketer, the number of smartphone users around the globe will surpass two billion in 2016. Mobile marketing has grown immensely, but it’s likely we haven’t seen the half of it.

If we shift gears to looking for revenue opportunities, consider utilizing the digital signage market. The estimates by an analysis from Marketandmarkets.com is that the figure was $14.63 billion in 2014 for digital signage, and it’s expected to increase to $23.76 billion by 2020. In other words, the growth will maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.18 percent between 2015 and 2020.

“The digital signage option is often disregarded but is a good long-term strategy for digital marketing. Most of the time the conversation seems to frequently revolve around social networking services and native ads within the mobile space. As it turns out you can exploit and WOW audiences with a digital signage as an alternative solution,” says Australian-based FM Digital Group.

tips2

Digital signage stats and metrics to bear in mind:

  • Digital displays capture 400 percent more views than static displays.
  • Eight out of every ten customers entered a store because of a sign catching their interest.
  • A retailer confirmed a 24 percent increase in footfall after implementing digital signage technologies.
  • Exactly 80 percent of brands experienced an increase of up to 33 percent in additional sales through the use of digital signage.
  • First 90 percent of new customers are acquired in bank branches.

There is a return on investment (ROI) with a digital signage plan and will enable you to drum up business. In addition, the costs of digital signage are illustrated by HigherEd TechDecisions (B2B publication) with the associated costs: business, content, hardware, software, connectivity, design and operations.

No matter what industry you find yourself in (retail, government, education, healthcare, retail) digital signage is a good option to explore and attract audiences through these high-definition screen displays (LCD, LED, etc).

Takeaways and Conclusions

Marketing your content is no easy task but it comes down to find a unique narrative to pitch via this channel. It needs to align with the business mission and company history, so your future customers can resonate with you have to say and eventually sell. Maintain a great level of authenticity, a polished reputation, great visibility and a solid perception of your brand.

Digital signage has proven to raise brand awareness by 48 percent. When consumers are concerned 68 percent of them are influenced to buy advertised products through digital signage. Last but certainly not the least 70 percent of the public is exposed to digital signage on a monthly basis.

15 Windows 10 problems – and how to fix them

Stop tearing your hair out and follow our tips

Although Windows 10 was a welcome upgrade from Windows 8 when it was first announced almost a year ago, its revamped UI makes it quite a jump, something that seems to be causing some confusion from its users.

The update sees much more integration between PCs, tablets and smartphones, meaning it should make life a lot easier than previous iterations, which were far too fragmented to make it a seamless experience.

And it seems as though Microsoft fans are happier with the update, because adoption figures show Windows 10 is running on almost 15 per cent of devices. It’s fast becoming the most popular version of Windows 10 to date and that’s certainly a positive thing for the technology superpower.

Although it’s received critical acclaim for its good-looking tile-based system and the removal of some of the more quirky aspects of Windows 7 and 8, there’s still some features in Windows 10 that probably don’t work as seamlessly as they should.

So whether you’re struggling to update your device to Windows 10, or discovered you have a lot less storage for your files, or you need to restore your entire machine, we’ve come up with a list of 15 tips and tricks to help you navigate your way through Microsoft’s newest operating system.

1 – Can’t upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8

We could write a book about the problems people report with the upgrade to Windows 10. From the Get Windows 10 (or GWX) app reporting that perfectly viable computers aren’t compatible, through to the app never appearing in the first place, and to stalled and failed downloads. If you’ve got a PC still stubbornly clinging to Windows 7 or Windows 8, there are a few things to try:

  1. Open Control Panel, run Windows Update and ensure that the PC is fully up to date. If updates fail, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter (see below, number 3)
  2. Use the Media Creation Tool. Don’t rely on GWX: visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10, click Download tool now, save the tool and run it on the PC you want to upgrade. If this didn’t work for you back when Windows 10 launched, try it again now – the tool has been improved.
  3. Make sure that hardware Disable Execution Prevention (DEP) is switched on in the BIOS, referring to your motherboard manual for help if you need it. If you still have problems, use the Start Menu to search for ‘performance’, run Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, click the Data Execution Prevention tab and turn DEP on for all programs and services, then reboot and try again.

2 – Can’t upgrade to the latest Windows 10 version

Windows 10 got a significant update (the Windows 10 Fall update) in November, but many computers have failed to install it automatically. From the Start Menu, type ‘winver’ and hit Enter. The latest build number is 10586.XX: if you’re still on 10240 you’ve missed out.

You can try troubleshooting Windows Update (see below), but in our experience, it’s best to use the Media Creation Tool. Download it and use it to upgrade the PC. Note that you’ll see a ‘Ready to install’ screen that, worryingly, doesn’t mention anything about an update: this is correct, just check that the installer is about to install the correct Windows 10 version (Home or Pro) and that it’s set to keep personal file and apps, then click Install – your data, apps and (almost) all of your settings will remain untouched.

3 – Have a lot less free storage than before

You’re probably unaware that after installing Windows 10, the previous version of the OS is still lingering in the background taking up valuable space. That’s right, when you upgraded, your old version of Windows didn’t just disappear into thin air. Oh no, it’s still there in the back of your system going by the name of ‘windows.old’ and taking up disk space.

This is because Microsoft isn’t quite as controlling as some other big tech companies, and instead of forcing you to update your hardware and never look back, it keeps a hold of the important files that made up your previous OS in the C:/ drive in case you don’t take a shine to Windows 10 and decide to revert back to your previous version.

To delete it forever, hit the Windows Start button and start typing “cleanup” to automatically search your system. A ‘Disk Cleanup’ app should appear before your eyes in the search criteria field. Click on this to open the app.

A drive selection box will pop up. Select the drive your OS is installed on. The default drive should show first, this is usually C:/ drive. Once you’re confident this is your main drive where your OS is installed, select OK. Windows will scan your system for a few moments, then a box will pop up.

Now, two things could happen at this point. You could be presented with a list of files to delete right away, one of which is “Previous Windows Installation(s)”, or if that option is not visible, you will need to select the “Clean up system files” option on the bottom left.

Windows will do some more calculations and give you another a very similar looking box, this time with the option to delete ‘previous windows installation(s). You might have to scroll down to find it, but it should be taking up a sizeable bit of drive space, in our case, almost 5GB. Tick this option and click OK. In the separate message box that appears asking if you’re certain you want to send this, click Delete Files, and you’re done.

4 – Windows Update isn’t working

Many people have reported issues with Windows Update in Windows 10. Check first that you’ve upgraded to the Windows 10 Fall update (see above, number 2). If you’re still getting problems, download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, then reboot and try to update again.

If the problems remain, you might need to get a bit more stuck in. First, check that System Restore is configured (see below, number 7) and create a restore point. With this done, use Win+x and select Command Prompt (Admin), then type ‘net stop wuauserv’ (without the quotes) and hit Enter, followed by ‘net stop bits’ and Enter. You should see confirmations that each service was either stopped or wasn’t running. Next, open Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, and delete its contents including any sub-folders. Now reboot, open Windows Update and click Check for updates.

5 – Turn off forced updates

If you’re anything like us, you set up previous Windows releases so that they wouldn’t install updates automatically – one forced reboot is one too many. To be fair to Microsoft, Windows 10 handles post-update reboots much more elegantly, but we’d still rather be in control from the outset.

There is a workaround for users running Windows 10 Pro: from the Start Menu, search for ‘gpedit’ and run the Group Policy Editor. Expand Computer Configuration in the left-hand pane, and navigate to Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update. Double-click Configure Automatic Updates in the list, select the Enabled radio button, and in the left-hand box select 2 – Notify for download and notify for install. Now click OK, and you’ll be notified whenever there are updates – unfortunately, they’ll be a daily irritation if you’re using Windows Defender.

The Group Policy Editor isn’t available on Windows 10 Home, but we’d recommend you at least open Windows Update, click Advanced options and select Notify to schedule restart from the Choose how updates are installed list. While you’re here, all Windows 10 users might want to click Choose how updates are delivered, and ensure that Updates from more than one place is either off, or set to PCs on my local network.

6 – Fix privacy and data defaults

We’re not a fan of some of the data-sharing defaults in Windows 10, and we’d recommend all users review them periodically. Use the Start Menu to search for and run the Settings app, then click Privacy. In the left-hand pane, you’ll see many areas where your computer might be sharing data. It’s worth spending time checking that you’re comfortable with allowing apps to use your computer’s camera, microphone, account information and so on, and where you are, checking that no surprise apps appear in the lists. Note, too, that the default Feedback & diagnostics setting is to send enhanced data to Microsoft.

If you use Windows Defender, click the back arrow and select Update & Security, then Windows Defender. Check that you’re happy with the default behaviour, which is to enable Cloud-based detection and Automatic sample submission.

Many people are uncomfortable with the idea of Wi-Fi Sense, which is designed to get you onto wireless networks more quickly. On a device with Wi-Fi, click the back arrow, select Network & Internet, click WiFi and select Manage WiFi Settings. We’d strongly recommend turning off Connect to suggested open hotspots, Connect to networks shared by my contacts, and disabling the button under Paid WiFi services if it’s present.

Additionally, Wi-Fi Sense might result in the sharing of your network’s wireless credentials among devices you don’t control: allow a guest to log in and their contacts – and potentially theirs in turn – may also be able to. Ridiculously, the only fix is to rename your network’s SSID so that it ends with “_optout”. We’d recommend confining guests to a guest wireless network, configuring your own devices not to use Wi-Fi Sense, and asking staff to do the same before allowing their Windows 10 devices onto the main wireless network.

7 – Where’s Safe Mode when you need it?

Nothing gets you out of Windows trouble like Safe Mode, which is why it’s inexplicable that you can no longer enter it by pressing F8 or Shift+F8 at boot. Although it’s still available in Windows 10, you have to boot into Windows first, then either restart holding the left Shift key or via an option within Update & Security in the Settings app. Neither method is helpful if your PC can’t boot into Windows in the first place.

You can’t get around this, which is why it’s helpful to create a boot time Safe Mode option before trouble arrives. Hit Win+x and select Command Prompt (Admin), then type bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Windows 10 Safe Mode” and hit Enter. From the Start Menu type msconfig, run System Configuration in the results, and navigate to the Boot tab. Highlight the Windows 10 Safe Mode option you just created, tick Safe boot and select Minimal under Boot options and – if necessary – reduce the Timeout value so you won’t be inconvenienced – the minimum is three seconds. Tick Make all boot settings permanent (in fact you can simply return here to delete the Safe Mode entry) and click OK.

You can repeat these steps, substituting suitable names in quotes at the Command Prompt, to create shortcuts for Safe Mode with Networking (tick Network rather than Minimal in System Configuration) and Safe Mode with Command Prompt (Alternate shell).

8 – Enable System Restore

Another inexplicable choice in Windows 10 is that System Restore isn’t enabled by default; we wouldn’t hesitate to turn it on. Search for ‘Create a restore point’ in the Start Menu and select it in the results, then highlight the system drive, click the Configure button and select Turn on system protection. Use the slider to set an appropriate amount of maximum disk space – about 5GB ought to be enough. Note that, annoyingly, the upgrade to Windows 10 version 10586 turns this off again – you’ll need to turn it back on.

9 – Bad localisation, Cortana ‘not available’

Windows 10’s localisation options seem needlessly convoluted, and we’ve had multiple reports of incorrect localisation even in computers that were upgraded from correctly localised Windows 7 or Windows 8 installations. The most common issue seems to be dates in the American format MM/DD/YY, but Windows can also report that Cortana isn’t available, even in regions where it is.

From the Start Menu, search for region and choose Region & language settings. Check that United Kingdom is selected under Country or region, and check that your chosen language(s) appear under Languages. Select your primary language, click Options and click Download under the language pack, and speech options if they’re present. Check on this page that the keyboard is also correct – if it isn’t, add the correct one then select the wrong one and remove it.

Click the back arrow and select Additional date, time & regional settings. Under Language, click Change input methods, select your chosen language, move it to the top of the list if it isn’t there already, and click Options. Under Windows display language you might see either Enabled or Available – if the latter, click Make this the primary language. If you don’t see either, download and install the language pack, then make it the primary language.

Click the back arrow to return to the language preferences, and in the left-hand pane click Change date, time, or number formats and check that the format is set to the correct language. Check the Home location on the Location tab, and finally use the Administrative tab to check the System locale, and use the Copy settings button to apply the settings to the Welcome screen and new user accounts.

10 – Fix slow boot times

Like Windows 8 before it, Windows 10 uses a hybrid boot to enable fast boot times. When you shut the system down, apps and app processes are terminated, but the Windows kernel itself is hibernated to allow for a faster restart. In theory, it’s great, but it seems to still be very slow for some Windows 10 users.

Disable it by searching for Power Options in the Start Menu and running the matching Control Panel applet, then in the left-hand pane click Choose what the power buttons do. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable, scroll down and un-tick Turn on fast start-up, then click Save changes. This should prevent very slow starts on affected PCs. Some users report that if they subsequently reboot, re-trace their steps and re-enable fast start-up the problem remains cured.

If you’re dual-booting between Windows 10 and Windows 7, switching fast start-up off will also fix the problem where Windows 7 checks the disks each time you boot it: With fast start-up enabled, the earlier operating system doesn’t recognise that the disks have been properly shut down by Windows 10.

11 – The lock screen gets in the way

Return to a locked Windows 10 device and you’ll see a pretty picture. That’s nice, but it’s a needless obstacle in the way of logging in. If you’re as impatient as we are, disable the lock screen by searching the Start Menu for regedit, and running the Registry editor.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows. If you don’t already see a key named ‘Personalization’, select the Windows key, right-click it, choose New>Key and rename this new key to Personalization (sic). Right-click the Personalization key, choose New again then select DWORD (32-bit) Value. Select New Value #1 in the right-hand pane and use F2 to rename it NoLockScreen, then double-click it, change the value data to 1 and click OK. After a reboot, the lock screen will be gone.

12 – I can’t play a DVD!

Windows 10 shipped without an app to play DVDs on. Which is not great if you like to watch movies on your PC.

Luckily, Microsoft has released an app as a download. Trouble is it costs £11.59. It also has garnered an overall rating of just two stars. Alternatively, you can download VLC, which is free and works just as well if not better.

13 – Stop Windows 10 using 4G data

Windows 10 often uses your internet bandwidth invisibly in the background which can play havoc with your data allowance if you’re using a portable hotspot.

To stop Windows 10 devouring your cellular data allowance in the background:

  1. Go to Settings, then Network & Internet.
  2. Select Wi-Fi and then Advanced Options.
  3. Click “Set as metered connection” to on, and Windows will stop fetching non-essential data in the background, such as app updates and Start screen tile updates.

Oddly, this tip doesn’t work if your PC connects to the internet via Ethernet.

14 – Save a web page as a HTML file in Microsoft Edge

Bizarrely, Microsoft’s new Windows 10 web browser can’t currently save web pages as a HTML file. The only workaround is to open the web page in Internet Explorer 11 (which is still included as standard with Windows 10) and save from there.

To do this:

  1. Select the menu on the far right-hand side of the Edge window.
  2. Select the ‘open with Internet Explorer’ option. This will open your current web page in a new tab in IE.
  3. In IE 11, press Control-S on your keyboard to access the Save as dialogue box.

15 – Turn on Pop-Up Blocker in Edge

If you used Microsoft Edge, you may find that pop-up ads will get in the way of the websites you actually want to visit. You can disable pop-ups by clicking on the icon with three dots on the right-hand side of the address bar and then clicking on “Settings”, then “View advanced settings”. Under “Block pop-ups” make sure this is setto “On”.

How Digital Signage Can Help You Increase Sales and Connect with Customers (New Balance, Foot Locker)

Digital signage is found in more and more businesses today, and you would likely have seen it in retail shops and along main street. It encompasses a variety of electronic displays, everything from advertisements in Times Square to electronic menus outside restaurants. There are various ways in which a business can use the technology for their needs: providing news and information for visitors, as a “salesperson” to promote products to passing shoppers, or activities to keep bored children entertained in a shopping mall.

How Can a Business Use Digital Signage?

The main aim for any business investing in digital signage will be to earn additional revenue. The technology can act as a form of direct sales by educating customers about what options are available in store, including any current offers. Upselling is an ideal method of earning additional revenue and can be done by providing customers with information about similar but higher-priced items, or items that can be added, perhaps bundling them together in special offers. If yours is a larger retail store or brick-and-mortar business, it can also help customers find what they are looking for and act as a form of help desk.

Analyse Potential Drawbacks

Before making any business investment, it is important that you consider potential drawbacks. This is the same for digital signage. Some cons:

  • This is generally not a cheap method of advertising in terms of initial outlay. However, there is a trend for retailers buying standard TV screens and implementing touchscreens onto them as a cheaper alternative.
  • Return on investment can be a tricky concept to analyse — unless you build in tracking codes for when people buy directly from the screen.
  • The system will be out there in the open and put under regular strain with the threat of screen damage and repair costs.
  • If your business prioritises savings on energy use, some digital signage technologies may not align with your current environmental concerns. However, more energy-efficient models are becoming available.

It’s in the Design

Design and presentation of information when using digital signage will play a major role in customer interaction, and whether or not they feel they are being aided or impeded by the technology. Important design concepts to consider include:

  • Catch the eye: This doesn’t mean overloading visitors with bright images or tons of content. A simple but effective UI is essential. Include interesting, helpful content that promotes your products and services as well as your business brand.
  • Answer questions: There is no point investing in the technology if it is merely going to be a fad item. Answer questions your customers may have about items or latest offers, and provide useful information that makes their interaction with digital signage worthwhile.
  • Call to action: You’ve got your customer in the palm of your hands — don’t lose them! Calls to action are vital in all areas of advertisement. Getting it right, offering incentives for customer to interact, and emphasising it with subtle colour through digital signage is essential.

No two retail or brick-and-mortar businesses are the same, and the marketing strategy you employ should always be unique. For digital signage, keep the following in mind:

  • Building relationships: Customers want more from businesses than just an item of clothing or similar goods. They want to form a relationship with the place they are buying from. Informing customers about your business and services, and the people who help it to function, can build affinity and form lasting relationships. Include testimonials, success stories, and reviews.
  • Goals: It may seem that putting some sale items on a digital display and including social media symbols is enough, but what do you really want to get out of the technology? Knowing the answer to this will aid design and make it better targeted.
  • Freshness: Part of building relationships with customers and them returning to your business is freshness — of items, of the shop environment, and of digital signage. Fresh content should provide new insights or concepts for customers to explore.

It’s Not Just for External Marketing

Among the most important aspects of running a business is keeping employees informed, educated, and happy. Digital signage can actually aid this process by:

  • Reaching personnel who may not often be in front of online business communications to better educate them about developments.
  • Improving culture through the promotion of employee achievements and milestones.
  • Communicating internal information that employees may otherwise feel they are not being told about, thus keeping them “in the loop” and showing they are valued.

Remember: Your Business Is Unique

One of the most important aspects of successful digital signage implementation for a business is emphasising the unique qualities of your business. This can be done by highlighting what makes your products different from the shop next door, emphasising local relations, or simply using digital signage in a clever way to make your business stand out from the crowd.
